The provision of a reliable and cheap source of energy is critical to Cambodia's development. Hydropower is one way to achieve this goal. However, the larger hydropower dams currently planned for the Mekong and its tributaries will have significant negative impacts on food security.
This film was produced by Conservation International and filmmaker Allan Michaud to address the question, how can sustainable energy be developed, while avoiding the associated negative impacts that dams can cause to food security and vital ecosystem services for the people of Cambodia?
Conservation International, as part of the scientific community, recommends that a moratorium be placed on these dams until more assessments can be made. Also, this will allow the implementation of environmentally friendly dam locations and designs, which can generate similar amounts of energy but significantly reduce impacts on ecosystems and food security.
Greater Mekong's regional economies are interested in moving towards more sustainable growth. If realized, this green development will lead to better ecosystem benefits for the ecosystem services and the people that depend upon it.
